- Field Oriented Control (FOC) and more recently Direct Torque Control (DTC) have been the algorithms of choice for high performance induction machine drive systems. Recently a different algorithm based on the concept of controlling the real and imaginary powers in the machine has been proposed. This algorithm is called Instantaneous Power Control (IPC). This paper presents a brief outline of the IPC algorithm, and then will, via simulation and experiment, examine the robustness of IPC to parameter variations. The transient performance of IPC and FOC are experimentally determined under similar parameter uncertainty. The low speed operating limit of IPC is investigated when a phase locked loop based back-emf estimation techniqued is utilised.
